The taarab music of Zanzibar is the most popular form of music in the archipelago of Comoros. This music, after coming to this country, has gained fame in the name of twarab. There are a few bands, which play twarab music. These include the Belle Lumiere, Sambeco and others. There are also some singers who sing twarab, the most popular of them being Mohammed Hassan.

Hamza El Din, pioneering oud master from Sudan, performs mesmerizing music based on traditional Arabic forms.
As the Moors swept across the northern stretches of the African continent, they left in their wake a rich legacy of music, myths, and legends. Performing brilliantly on the oud (the Arab precursor of the lute) and on the tar (the ancient single-skinned frame drum of the upper Nile), interwoven with his hypnotic voice, he has singlehandedly created a new music, essentially a Nubian/Arabic fusion in line with both traditions and informed by Western conservatory training. This album includes an original composition,"The Visitors," which he composed in Baghdad in 1965, in Iraqi Arabic with Egyptian melody and Sudanese pentatonic.

Other tracks feature his arrangements of traditional songs celebrating a first wedding ("Ollin Arageed"); sending a river-pulley worker's greetings to his beloved via a pelican ("Helalisa"); and paying tribute to the incomparable Egyptian songstress Um Kalthoum (1902-1975). "Mwashah" is a classical piece from the time of the Moors in Spain, traditionally used to train voices.

Ard Al-Sawad, which can be translated as either the dark or the fertile land, is the name the Arabs gave to Iraq when they conquered the country in 651 A.D. It is said that the name comes from the fact that it was dusk when the Arab armies first arrived, and thus their first glimpse of the land was coloured by the shadows of the thousands of palm trees that they saw. A different account has it that the name is derived from the famous fertility of the Iraqi soil.

Abdelaziz Abdellah, known by his nickname "Alla", is a self-taught Algerian oud player who developed his own style of improvisation and became known as an unusually creative virtuoso who improvised in a very different style of oud than other masters. He comes from Bechar in the Algerian Sahara and his music is ample and has a spiritual dimension. It is intense and light at the same time and brings that inner silence that takes its roots in the desert. Alla is recognised as the best oud player in all of southern Oran. He has held several concerts in Europe, including the Theatre de la Ville in Paris. Recently he began mixing accents from other Mediterranean regions in his music.
